Capital Pride Announces 2010 Heroes and Engendered Spirit Awards
Washington, DC (Capital Pride) May 5, 2010 -- As the city prepares for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride season, Capital Pride is pleased to announce the 2010 Capital Pride Heroes and Capital Trans Pride Engendered Spirit Award honorees (http://www.capitalpride.org/?page_id=168). The 2010 Heroes and Engendered Spirit Awards Reception will kick off the 35th Anniversary Celebration of Capital Pride on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 at the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year’s honorees include five Capital Pride Heroes whose work has positively impacted the local LGBT community, and five Capital Trans Pride Engendered Spirit Award honorees whose work greatly contributes to the transgender community. Capital Pride’s 2010 Super Hero is Deacon Maccubbin, will be honored for his lifetime work as an outspoken LGBT activist and owner of the iconic Lambda Rising stores.
“This year’s Heroes and Engendered Spirit Award honorees are a diverse group of people who continue to make a lasting impact on the DC LGBT community,” said Dyana Mason, Executive Director of Capital Pride. “Our Super Hero selection of Deacon Maccubbin connects our past with our present, which is particularly exciting as we celebrate Capital Pride’s 35th Anniversary.”
“For the second year in a row, Capital Trans Pride will be fully integrated into the Capital Pride celebrations,” said Jessica McKinnon, Chair of Capital Trans Pride. “We are excited that the 2010 Engendered Spirit honorees will be sharing the spotlight with all of our local heroes, at the awards reception, pride parade and pride festival.”
In addition to this year’s Heroes and Engendered Spirit Award honorees, Capital Pride will also be celebrating the lives and contributions of Board Members Larry Stansbury and Bill Miles who recently passed away.
“Bill and Larry were not only long-time supporters, leaders and volunteers of Capital Pride, but were also key to helping us establish Capital Pride as its own individual entity,” commented Michael Lutz, President of the Board. “As a Board we will be honoring the memories and years of servant-leadership to the Community that are more perpetual in nature.” The Board is currently discussing plans for how the organization will honor Stansbury’s and Miles’ service in the coming months.
The 2010 Capital Pride Heroes and Capital Trans Pride Engendered Spirit Awards Reception will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Madison Hotel. In addition to the reception, Heroes and Engendered Spirit Honorees will ride in the Capital Pride parade on June 12th and will participate in the Capital Pride Festival on June 13th.
